The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), housed at the University of Michigan, maintains a data archive of more than 250,000 files of research in the social sciences. It hosts 16 specialized collections of data in education, aging, criminal justice, substance abuse, terrorism, and other fields.
IPUMS, available from the Institute for Social Research and Data Innovation at the University of Minnesota, provides micro-level population sample data from the US and international census records. In addition to providing the data free of charge, variables and documentation have been standardized over time to facilitate comparisons between time periods.
Coordinated by the Office of Management and Budget, the Federal statistical system is comprised of the major data and statistics collecting agencies in the government. This decentralized network has 15 major agencies and upwards of 90 smaller bodies tasked with collecting data and generating and publishing statistics and reports covering an extensive range of topics.
