Research Tips

Keep a running list or a log of your research.  This list/log should include terms you gather from class notes & readings, subject headings culled from databases & library catalogs, and terms used in articles.  For example:

Library of Congress uses multiple subject headings
   American literature -- Indian authors -- Themes, Motives
   Gender identity
   specific tribal names (i.e. Cherokee)
   Indians in literature

MLA (the primary literature database) uses
   Native American
   identity politics
   Two spirit (as well as two spirits Native American, two spirit people, two spirited, two spirits native)

Journal Databases

Below are just a few of the databases we recommend you use when starting research projects.  The Kenyon Databases A-Z list contains many more subject specific databases.  Please contact a member of the reference staff to assist you with your questions.
