October 4: Choose one of the following:

  1. Most religions have stories explaining aspects of their traditions.  Scholars refer to these as myths. Discuss the character and functions of myths as elements of religious traditions. Draw on examples from two or more religious traditions in your discussion.

  2. The question of morality occupies a central place in most religious traditions.  Scholars have identified two contrasting approaches concerning how to pursue and achieve the appropriate rectitude: obedience to divine law or the cultivation of virtuous qualities. Draw on examples form two or more religious traditions to discuss theses approaches to ethics and morality.

November 15: Choose one of the following:

  1. Drawing on two or more religious traditions, discuss religious fundamentalism in the modern world.  Be sure to identify the general characteristics of religious fundamentalism and address issues of politics and violence.
  2. Taking a historical approach, discuss how issues of gender have evolved in two religions of your own choosing.  This must be two distinct religions, not two sects of the same religion (Baptists and Pentecostals belong to the same religion as do Sunni and Shi'ites).
