Assignment

Each student will submit an 8 to 10 page research paper on a topic related to Islam chosen in consultation with the instructor.  The topic must deal with an issue related to the religion of Islam and focus on events that took place or institutions which developed during the time period covered by this course.  Papers on institutions that developed during Islam’s formative centuries may of course make reference to the modern and contemporary periods, but the focus of the paper should not be on the contemporary world, unless you get permission to do so well in advance of the deadline for choosing the topic on September 22.  Papers on the Arab-Israeli conflict, Arab nationalism, the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Al-Qaeda, or “the Arab Spring” are outside of the parameters of this course.  If you have any doubts about the acceptability of a particular topic come and see me.  Students will present a 250 word description of the topic and the reasons for choosing it on September 26.  A complete version of the paper will be turned in on October 31.  The paper should be presented as a completed document with a title page, page numbers, bibliography and full and accurate citations.
