October 18: Choose one of the following:

  1. The Gospels are not disinterested biographies about Jesus. While they contain some biographical information, they are primarily documents of faith. That is, the writers were invested in conveying what early Christians believed about the significance of Jesus of Nazareth. Write an essay discussing the primary message that the writer of the Gospel According to Matthew is seeking to convey and the method or argumentation he employs. Conclude with a paragraph concerning logic and strength of the author's argumentation.

  1. Paul's Epistle to the Romans is considered the most theological of his writings. Discuss why, what theological point(s) is at the center of the letter, and arguments what does the author employ. 

  2. Paul in particular and the NT in general are often criticized for being hyper patriarchal and sexist. Write an essay discussing the tension between gender inclusiveness and patriarchy in the NT in general or Paul's writings in particular.
