Author searches will locate books and essays written by a particular author

Title searches will locate a specific work

Keyword searches:

• Find works that appear in collections or anthologies 
• Find themes, ideas, and topics 

Or consider using subject headings for more precise results. If a keyword search leads to a book that seems promising, click on the subject heading links at the bottom of the record to see similar items. You can also select "subject heading" in the "search by" box and try the following:

• Language and Culture
• Language and Languages Origin
• Sociolinguistics
• Africa -- Languages

You can also search the OhioLINK catalog, which contains the holdings of almost every college and university library in Ohio. Or Worldcat which a collection of catalogs from around the world. 

Reference works, such as encyclopedias and handbooks, are a good place to search for ideas for a research topic and to begin your research.  Their articles provide background information and context and may also list additional books and articles on your topic.

One way to find reference works is to browse the library's reference collection under the appropriate Library of Congress classification.  The area for linguistics is "P", but there may additional sources elsewhere.  Ask the reference librarian for assistance.
