KAP: Introduction to the Kenyon College Library and Its Resources: Books

Searching Our Library Catalog: CONSORT

The CONSORT catalog (link below) may be used to locate books, government documents, documentaries, sound recordings, and many other types of materials available in the Kenyon Library.  Because your guest Kenyon library guest account only allows you to borrow items owned by Kenyon, be sure your first step in using our catalog is to Limit by location and focus your search for materials held at Kenyon.  You should note one further restriction of your library account: you will NOT be able to access electronic books or indexes off campus.  Some government documents may be available from federal websites and those you are able to access from off campus.

Begin your research using simple WORD searches:

nurses world war  The search results indicate there are 31 books on this topic at Kenyon.  Look further at the individual record for: They called them angels: American military nurses of World War II to find terms to add to your search strategy and narrow the search:  add 'united states'

nurses world war united states  There are 17 search results using these keywords.  Each online record will tell you quite a bit about the book including if it is electronic or physically in our library, where is it located (call numbers D, E, F are "History" on the third floor of the library, H is in the area of "women's studies" on the 2nd floor, the call number will also indicate that it is a government document (location information may be found in the 'record' for each title).  The downside to using keyword searches is that you may also find less-relevant materials because of the broad search terms.  These materials can be quickly eliminated by using common sense or subject headings listed within each library item's record..

Narrow your focus and use your time wisely:

Use subject heading linksmore materials on your topic may be found within each electronic record.  Just 'click' on the relevant link:

Subject World War, 1939-1945 -- Medical care -- United States
World War, 1939-1945 -- Personal narratives, American
Nurses -- United States -- Biography
United States -- Armed Forces -- Nurses -- Biography

You may also browse the shelves above and below the book on your topic this method often helps you find related books.

Use published bibliographies in relevant books and journal articles..
