Starting a Family Tree

There are hundreds of examples of print genealogy records you may keep on your subjects and also a variety of software programs available.  My advice is to give a few types of records a trial run and see which form or software meets your research criteria.  Do you want to trace family groups or individuals?  What would you want to trace about an individual beyond birth, death, marriage, and children?  For example military service?  Movement across the United States or from another country?  Are you searching for judicial records?  What time period are you most interested in researching?  Are there censuses for the time?  What records are available?
