AGENDA:

1) Reminder WGS open House common hour Tuesday, Oct. 5, 11:00-1:00 O’Connor
2) Meetings leader discussant. (Perhaps each member can take care of convening one meeting and leading the discussion to make it really democratic and collective).
3) Progress Report on the Anti-Racism workshop (Clara) (see plan below)
4) Mission Statement (attached). Please bring suggestions

5) Pending:
a. To charge a two faculty members to work with Karen Greever and Carmen King on a website for the TNC to encourage more collaborations with other interdisciplinary groups.
b. Proposal for a Teaching Initiative Grant. Objective: To develop projects that explore intersections of identity through collaborative teaching, and to organize a panel discussion on the subject that would be open to the Kenyon community.
c. To explore the possibility of a a faculty –student symposium.
d. To develop a long-term action plan for the Transnational Collective.

MINUTES

1. After a few reminders, we agreed that having a meetings leader discussant was not necessarily a good idea. Clara will continue to call the meetings and handle the minutes this academic year.

2. Laurie announced that Rickie Solinger will give a lecture, "Who Gets to be a /Real/ Mother in the U.S -- and Who Decides?: Race, Class, and Maternal Legitimacy in American History" on October 27 at 7 pm.

3. The Mission Statement was approved with minor changes.  Laurie agreed to draft a brief description of the TNC for the webpage and work with Karen and Carmen to set it up. (It is up already!  Take it look at it:  http://lbis.kenyon.edu/transnational
Irene will provide images will also help maintain.

4. Clara reported on the Anti-Racism Workshop general plan (below).

Plan for the Anti-Racism Workshop- Jan 22, 2011(tentative date)
Facilitators: Chimi Boyd-Keyes and Barbara Kulton

Outcomes
Participants will:
  *  Examine white privilege/white supremacy and anti-racism at the
    personal/individual level as well as at the system/organizational
    level.
  * Own/identify the responsibility and accountability we all have as
    campus leaders in dismantling racism and working with white
    privilege/white supremacy and acting from that position.
  * Explore intersections of identity and transnationalism
  * Have opportunity for personal exploration and self-reflection on
    oppression and privilege
  * Engage in coalition-building work and utilize principles of
    grassroots organizing to mobilize the campus
  * Leave with resources on best practices, models and references to
    continue your work.
  * Continue work on identifying what happens at your campus that
    interrupts cultural norms and/or institutional practices that are
    racist and/or actively creates explicitly anti-racist norms or
    practices.

  * Multicultural Organization Development model
  * Levels of Oppression
  * Coalition, partnership, and collaboration frameworks

Format:
  * Overview of models/frameworks
  * Anti-racism/anti-oppression workshop activities

  * Identifying next steps of the coalition

4. Travis brought up the idea of including students in the meetings.  After a brief discussion, we agreed that we could invite students for a special event, such as a lunch, but the group prefers to reserve this space for faculty.

5.  We briefly discussed possible faculty teams for the Teaching Initiative grant. Clara will contact Ivonne to pair up this spring; Laurie will contact Sarah Murnen (to do something on fraternities). Any others?

6. Clara will contact Crossroads to work on coalition building towards the Anti-Racism Workshop.
