Research Prospectus & Bibliography — 3 page paper (apprx. 950 words), plus bibliography (no fewer than five sources), due September 26th. For this assignment, students will compose a detailed outline of the report that will become their final research paper. Your prospectus will include a preliminary thesis, a brief description of the primary artist(s) and objects (paintings, sculpture, graphics, etc.) you will discuss, and a bibliography of your key sources (books, journals, exhibition catalogs, and archives). You must include at least two images with your report (black and white reproductions are fine). All students are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with the instructor before September 13th to discuss their project.
Critical Article Analysis — 3 page paper (apprx. 950 words), due October 17th. For this assignment, students will read and respond to a journal article that appears on their prospectus bibliography. In addition to a summation of the author’s thesis, your analysis must provide a critical response to the text that identifies its strength and weaknesses. What is the author’s methodology? What objects, texts, or citations does s/he use to support their argument successfully? Additionally, you must tie this article into your own research project: how does this article support, complicate, or differ from your project? Do you plan to follow a similar path or methodology? Remember to clearly note the source of your article immediately in your essay.
Final Research Paper — 8 to 10 page paper, due December 19 at 5 PM. Your research paper must include at least six different sources and no fewer than five images. You must provide correct citations (footnotes) for all of your sources. All students are encouraged to submit a rough draft to the instructor by December 5th.
